History of Our Building

Jasmine's is the newest chapter in a building steeped in local history.

The Methodist Episcopal South Church Building, now privately owned by Jasmine's, was completed in 1922. It is a simple expression of Gothic Revival architecture, with its characteristic pointed arches and buttresses. In 1984, the building was placed on the National Historic Register.

The renowned Povey Brothers, traveling artisans who worked throughout the Northwest in the early 1900s, designed the original stained glass.

Many windows were badly damaged or destroyed during the infamous Roseburg Blast of 1959, when a truck filled with explosives detonated, leveling eight city blocks. The large window on the east wall is the only stained glass window that remained intact after the blast.

The large window on the west wall originally had a painting of Christ in a rich burgundy wine colored robe, holding a lamb in his arms. When this and other windows were repaired in the early '60s, extensive use was made of the brighter blue glass seen framing much of this window.
